2000 Western Region Winter Meeting

2000 Western Region Winter Meeting

Water Skier
with Disabilities Association (WSDA)

Report

Goals for 1999:

1.   Increase
the number of water skiers with disabilities through out region.

2.   Increase
the number of water skiers with disabilities who attend class C and Novice
tournaments.

3.   Open
up more tournaments to water skiers with disabilities.

4.   Provide
information to ski clubs and individuals interested in WSDA.

Goals Met:

1.   Several
organizations offered clinics to new and intermediate water skiers with
disabilities.Demand was so high that
DSUSA is offering weekly clinics near Sacramento for the 2000 season. If you
live in other areas contact me for clinics near you.

2.   Since
the number of disabled has dropped of over the years, many clubs stopped
offering a disabled division.I
personally entered several tournaments as a mens 3 skier. The draw back is sit ski women and MP2 and
novice disabled skier are left out because they are still using a mini or inner
course for slalom.Tricks and jump are
not affected.I will continue to
encourage skier to sign up to make it worth while to offer a disabled division.

3.   As
it was explained to me last year, a disabled division could not be added if it
was not in the regional guide? Some
groups said they would add a disabled division for this year.

4.   I
received several calls for people interested in WSDA and passed on information
as it was requested. Thanks for
including my name and number in the Regional Guide as the WSDA Western
Representative!

Conradulations to
the 1999 US Disabled Waterski Gold Medal Team.

The US team took the gold back from the British by a team score
of 14,391 to 13,949 in their home country. This was a first class event and a
very nice site just outside of London England.
There were 15 countries represented, which made for a very competitive
event.

Western regional skier attending.Mark Turner took a gold in Slalom. Steve Hornsey took a silver in
Jump and Bronze over all.

2000 US Disabled
Nationals
will be back in Birmingham Alabama again, thanks to Steve Murry
and the Magic City Ski Club.Lake Shore
Foundation has sponsored previous nationals and it looks like they will be
there again this year.As I understand
it the Magic City Ski Club plans to host 2001, 2002, 2003 Disabled Nationals as
well

2001 Worlds

The Austrailians are bidding on the 2001 Disabled World
Championship to return them to the land down under.

Mike Mosley attended the 1999 Disabled World Championship
and was a big help to the team and observed the site and tournament.Mike and the Lake Shore Foundation planto place a bid and bring the 2003 Disabled
World Championships home to the Birmingham site that the Magic City Water ski
Club has hosted the US Nationals last year.
Thanks Mike and Good luck on the Bid.

I am looking for an ski club and personnel interested in
hosting the 2004 Disabled Nationals.
The tournament has been held in Alabama since 1996 and I am seeing if
there is any interest in bringing it to the Western Region. As WSDA members are
relatively few, I really need some help to make this happen.Contact Steve Hornsey if you are interested
in helping me put together a bid.

Thanks

Steve Hornsey
